Which kitchen layout is perfect for your lifestyle?

Whether you are a self-proclaimed gourmet chef creating a beautiful masterpiece for a dinner party with friends, or a busy single dad who pops a frozen pizza in the oven for your two little tykes, there is no denying the kitchen is the heart of the home.

When I look at places, the kitchen is most often the biggest selling point.  Not only do I look at counter/cabinet space for all my fun little appliances, but I also look at the layout.  The layout needs to work for my needs.  I am a single girl with two jobs and no time to waste, who also hosts dinner parties monthly for friends to get together and try new food.

For my lifestyle the galley kitchen works great, it has two parallel counter tops with a walkway in between.  It offers enough counter/cabinet space for all my appliances.  It also allows for me to be the only chef in the kitchen, and entices my guests with the smell of the food while they chat in the dining room.

The horseshoe kitchen has three walls of counter space.  This layout is great for families.   It allows the chef in the family to prepare dinner while your 3rd grader sits at the peninsula and works on times tables.  The horseshoe layout can  have an island in the middle or like pictured below there is room for a table.

The L-Shape kitchen consists of counter top space on two adjoining walls.  This layout allows one chef to make avocado tostadas while another chef makes flan.  This L-shape kitchen also has an island for more storage space.

Now that you have figured out what kitchen layout works best for you or your family’s lifestyle, here is a fun recipe!

Avocado Tostada

1 can of low sodium black beans
1/2 cup cooked quinoa
4 oz mushrooms sliced
1 orange bell pepper sliced
1/4 onion sliced
1/2 cup kale chopped
1 avocado sliced
1/2 cup salsa
2 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon garlic
4 corn tostadas

Put beans in a pot add 1 1/2 cups of water to them. Add cumin, garlic, and cayenne to them. Cook until they mash.  You will use them as a spread.  You can lightly saute the vegetables.  Take a tostada and spread the black beans on it. Then top that with some quinoa. Then add the vegetables.   Next, add the avocado. Lastly, top it with salsa. You can also add fresh cilantro for more flavor.  Top it off with your favorite grilled protein!
